Edgar Allan Poe wrote romanticism poetry and literature. Elizabeth Arnold Poe and David Poe Jr. welcomed their son to the world on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. The author and poet passed away in 1849. He is a major contributor to modern American literature. Poe had become known for his works of fiction in the Gothic style. Death and lost love are his most repeated topics, and they fall into the dark romanticism genre.
Even in the short time he was alive, Poe’s short stories were a big step forward for fiction. In one of Poe’s tales, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, a mother and daughter killed brutally. In his poem “A Dream,” he wishes his life tragedies were dreams, and hoped for a better tomorrow. Reality seemed to offer him nothing but sadness. It filled his dreams with joy and color, because it filled his life with the darkness of death that touched everything he loved.
A Dream
In visions of the dark night
I have dreamed of joy departed—
But a waking dream of life and light
Hath left me broken-hearted.
Ah! what is not a dream by day
To him whose eyes are cast
On things around him with a ray
Turned back upon the past?
That holy dream—that holy dream,
While all the world were chiding,
Hath cheered me as a lovely beam
A lonely spirit guiding.
What though that light, thro’ storm and night,
So trembled from afar—
What could there be more purely bright
In Truth’s day-star?
-Poem by Edgar Allan Poe
The death of women who had been in Poe’s life not only provided the source of his genius, but also the material for his work.
Poe’s mother, and two other female influences, passed away too soon. His wife fell ill and eventually gave in to tuberculosis. His fiancée rejected him. Poe’s grief at the women he loved and it reflected their deaths in his works. He was struggling with depression.
Conclusion, based on Edgar Allan Poe’s works, heartbroken struggles with reality, merged with his genius mind and created dark Gothic short tales and poems. His works are still remarkable, and a product of genius. Poe’s narrative illustrates how he stayed a standout amongst the most respected and extraordinary storytellers and literary critics of the twentieth century.
